Do you think I have to wait for the guitar to mature to aquire a better sound, you know like when you buy new speakers and you have to wait about 20 hours to let them break in?
Do you think I should just return the guitar and try another brand? Its a nice looking guitar though. I can even hook it up to an amp and all.
I would really appreciate your input and expertise.
Thanks.

2It takes acoustic guitars longer then 20 hours for the wood to mature. Also you need to account for any differences in the wood used and construction techniques between the two guitars

3Changing the strings on your guitar would definatly make it sound brighter. You said you got it at the guitar center,,i was probably there for a good while and has never had the strings changed. If you havent already changed them. Also the sound diffence between the two guitar could be many things .I’m sure there not made of the same wood and if you say his guitar is 15 years old it probably is a better quality wood.Acoustic /electric’s like you have wont sound as good unplugged as a standerd acoustic.

4There are 2 things that you should consider…
First, change the strings. I would recommend Dean Markley Extra Light Phosphorous Bronze roundwound. These are about $10 a set.
Next, it will take years- not hours- for the guitar to break in, so don’t expect any guitar to sound great for quite some time. We suggest a 2 year break-in for our acoustics before optimum sound is achieved, and our guitars start at just over $1000.
Ibanez guitars are especially hard to break in because of the thick epoxy finish on them. They do this to make them look smooth and bright and shiny but this does affect the tone.
We use nitrocellulose lacquer which is difficult and dangerous to apply but it allows the guitar to develop a strong rich tone which only gets better with the passing of time.
